Softshell for kids – when does it make sense?
Softshell is neither rainwear nor fleece – it's something in between. But when is it actually the right choice, and what can it do that the other layers can't? Here's a simple guide.

What is softshell?
Softshell is a soft, stretchy outerwear that combines wind resistance and water repellency with high breathability. It is made of a durable material with recycled fibres and feels comfortable directly against the skin thanks to the soft edges and soft inner finish.
Technically, the material consists of two layers bonded together so that in practice it works as one continuous layer. This is what gives softshell its unique combination of stretch, wind resistance and breathability.
When should kids wear softshell?
Softshell is ideal at temperatures around +5°C, i.e. the mild spring and autumn days when classic rainwear becomes too stiff and heavy. It is especially good for active play, as the high breathability of 5,000 g/m² ensures the child doesn't overheat while moving.

Softshell or technical outerwear?
Wheat's technical outerwear is designed for the most demanding conditions, while softshell is the everyday choice for lighter weather. Here's the difference in practice:
• Softshell. Water-repellent, stretchy and breathable. Best for dry or slightly damp weather with lots of movement. Works well as the outer layer in spring and autumn.
• Technical outerwear. Fully waterproof with welded seams and a higher water column. Designed for heavy rain and more extreme weather. Best for proper rainy days.
If you have a very active child who runs a lot and sweats easily, softshell is often the best choice, even in light rain. If the child is sitting still or it's really raining, technical rainwear is the safe option.
Is softshell waterproof?
Softshell is water-repellent, not waterproof in the same way as rainwear. It holds up fine in light rain and short showers, but in heavy or prolonged rain, classic rainwear is recommended instead.
Safety and details
Like Wheat's other outerwear, the softshell suits have a detachable hood that clicks off easily, as well as reflective details that keep your child visible in the darker hours.

Washing, care and reproofing softshell
Correct washing and care extend the life of your softshell and preserve its water-repellent properties. Follow these steps:
How to wash softshell
1. Close all zips and turn the softshell inside out before washing.
2. Wash at 30 degrees on a gentle programme.
3. Never use fabric softener. It breaks down the water-repellent DWR coating over time.
4. Air dry the softshell. Avoid tumble drying on high heat, as it can damage the material.
How to reproof softshell
Over time, the water-repellent surface loses its effect. The sign is that water no longer beads off the material but soaks in. Here's how to restore the proofing:
5. Wash the softshell as described above.
6. While the softshell is still slightly damp, spray an even layer of PFC-free reproofer on the outside.
7. Let it dry completely before use, preferably in fresh air.
8. Alternatively, you can use a wash-in reproofer that is added directly to the machine as an extra step.
Always use a PFC-free reproofer so you don't introduce harmful chemicals into an otherwise certified product.
Frequently asked questions about softshell
When should kids wear softshell?
Softshell is ideal at temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees, especially on mild spring and autumn days with light rain and wind. Above 15 degrees, a lightweight jacket is often enough. Below 5 degrees, a snowsuit or thermo wear with rainwear on top is recommended.
Is softshell waterproof?
Softshell is water-repellent, not waterproof in the same way as rainwear. It holds up fine in light rain and short showers, but in heavy or prolonged rain, classic rainwear is recommended instead.
What's the difference between softshell and rainwear?
